Amazon Book Sales Calculator

Enter a sales rank (BSR) from an Amazon.com book page to estimate how many Kindle e-book copies sell per day and per 30 days, shown as a range. Add a price to work out the KDP royalty per copy for an e-book, paperback, or hardcover.

The Kindle Store or Books rank from Product details.

Needed for the 70% rate.

The Amazon Book Sales Calculator Chrome extension reads the rank on Amazon.com Kindle book pages and shows the same range right under the rating, so there is nothing to copy. Its toolbar icon opens the same manual calculator.

How this book sales calculator estimates sales

A sales rank is a recent snapshot of how a book sells compared with other books in the same store. It is not a sales report. This BSR to sales calculator turns the rank into copies per day with a rough power curve for US paid Kindle e-books: sales per day ≈ 66,200 × BSR−0.91. That is about 120 copies a day at rank 1,000, 15 at rank 10,000, and 1.9 at rank 100,000.

The curve is provisional. It is fitted to published rank and sales figures, some of them outputs of other sales calculators rather than real sales, and checked against 15 public author reports from 2020 to 2026. A fit to those reports stays within about 20% of the curve at ranks 1,000 to 100,000, but single reports scatter widely around it.

That is why every sales figure is a range: half to twice the curve value at ranks 1,000 to 100,000, a quarter to four times at ranks 101 to 999, and a quarter to twice above rank 100,000. The top 100 gets no number, because there is not enough public data for those ranks. The 30-day figure is the current daily range times 30: a scenario at today's pace, not a forecast.

Paperback and hardcover sales are not estimated. Public rank and sales data for print is too thin, and the e-book curve does not carry over to print books.

How royalties are worked out

The KDP royalty calculator part follows the current KDP rules for one US sale with no VAT:

In Kindle Unlimited, borrows move the rank as well as purchases, so for a KU title the range counts sales and borrows together and the 30-day royalty is left out: borrowing income can't be read from a rank. Your contract, discounts, taxes, and returns can change the real amount. Rules from KDP Help: e-book price requirements, digital book pricing, paperback royalty, hardcover royalty.

FAQ

How accurate is the estimate?

Treat it as a rough range. At ranks 1,000 to 100,000 the range aims to hold the real number, yet real sales can still fall outside it, and authors often report that sales calculators overestimate. Use it to compare books, not to plan income.

Where do I find a book's BSR?

On the book's Amazon.com page, scroll to Product details and find the sales rank line. Enter the first rank, in Kindle Store for an e-book or in Books for print, not a rank in a smaller category. A copied value such as #1,234 works.

Why is there no number for the top 100?

Books in the top 100 of the Kindle Store typically sell hundreds to thousands of copies a day, but there is not enough public data for a reliable estimate, so the calculator shows none rather than a guess.

Can it estimate paperback or hardcover sales?

No. For print it works out the royalty per copy from your price and printing cost, and says when there is not enough data for a sales estimate.

Does it count Kindle Unlimited page reads?

No. Tick In Kindle Unlimited for a KU e-book: the range then means sales plus borrows, and the income from pages read is not estimated.

Does it work for other Amazon stores?

Not yet. The curve and the royalty rules are for Amazon.com and prices in US dollars.

Is anything I type saved or sent?

No. The calculation runs in this page, in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere.
